A traditional Japanese transitional space positioned between inside and outside. Neither fully interior nor fully exterior, the engawa creates a climatic and social buffer that mediates light, air, temperature, and daily life. Rather than separating architecture from nature completely, it allows occupants to gradually adapt to changing environmental conditions. In contemporary architecture, the engawa offers an alternative to rigid thermal uniformity by introducing comfort gradients, seasonal awareness, and spatial ambiguity.
