PROJECT REVIEW

You can click the image to watch the video on YouTube.

A project usually goes through many design phases. Of course, the idea of each phase is to correct the direction a project is going (if needed) and define the boundaries for the next phase.

For this project some re-direction was required and in this video I share how I go about this re-direction.

Before Review

From the start the idea of the project was to profit as much as possible of the volume granting double height (or height and a half) to the main living areas. The above section shows this effect on the 2 ground floor units, but the idea mimics itself on the above units facing the street as well. As much as the client liked this idea, he felt the volume could be better exploited and an office space could be added to each of the units.

This of course makes the units bigger, stepping out from the boundary we had set ourselves originally. This is not a problem, but we should be aware that we are building more expensive units.

After Review

The redesign seems moderate, but it was more complicated than it looks. The main challenge I faced was with the ground units. Originally we had thought of having a mezzanine that could be accessed from the main bedroom. Although not totally against this idea, I wasn’t too happy with it either. I feel mezzanines are hard to access, so difficult to look after. I also didn’t like the idea of accessing it through the main bedroom.

So I set out to move the whole staircase so that we can have an intermediate area where we could place the office space overlooking the living room area.

Behind the scenes

In this video I’m showing off my office a bit more. I love my workspace. The clutter is just part of my creative process, I find myself around. When I don’t, it’s time to take a minute and sort things out.

SHORTS of the week!

The book I recommended

This is a book I always find myself recommending. I realize I find myself recommending it particularly to architects, and it was written by a (great) architect, but I think any one can enjoy it. It’s not technical at all, if anything it is quite philosophical as the author takes us through houses which actually reflect the spirit of the time or the concerns of the architect behind the design.

Book a meeting

If you’re working on a project where you think I could provide you some input, please do not hesitate to book a meeting with me. I try and keep a few slots open a week, but the idea is for these meetings to be very intensive.

As always, thank you all for your support,
